Government of Japan Prepares to Order LINE to Separate its System from NAVER After Data Breach in Late 2023.

Nikkei News Agency reports that an undisclosed source has revealed that the government is preparing to instruct LY Corp, the provider of messaging app LINE and Yahoo Japan, to enhance security measures following data breaches in both companies.

In the case of LY Corp, the incident was attributed to malware infecting an employee’s computer within the company’s NAVER Cloud environment, allowing unauthorized access to LY’s systems. It is expected that the government will mandate both companies to separate their identity verification systems. LY Corp has been categorized by the government as a “Specified Social Infrastructure Operator” requiring special control.

In addition to operational improvements, some within the ministry have suggested that SoftBank should acquire LY’s shares to reduce ties with NAVER.

Although no official directives have been given, LY Corp had previously announced plans to separate its identity verification system from NAVER Cloud, mandating all employees to use PCs controlled by the company to access the company’s network.
