The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has announced measures to require users of large numbers of SIM cards (6 digits or more) to verify their identities and provide service usage information to network service providers. These measures will be enforced starting January 16, 2024. The important details are as follows:
Users holding SIM cards from 6 to 100 numbers must verify their identity within 180 days.
Users holding SIM cards from 101 numbers and above must verify their identity within 30 days.
If identity verification is not completed within the specified timeframe, outgoing calls and internet access (except emergency numbers) will be suspended. After 30 days, if identity verification is still not completed, all numbers associated with the SIM card will be deactivated.
The NBTC states that this measure will not affect the majority of users, as approximately 300,000 users, or 0.5 percent of the total, fall into this category. This additional measure is implemented to prevent fraudulent activities in response to existing measures.
In relation to this, AIS has announced that they will send SMS notifications to customers holding numbers from 6 digits and above to verify their identities starting January 16, 2024.
TLDR: The NBTC has introduced measures to require users with large numbers of SIM cards to verify their identities. Failure to do so within the specified timeframe will result in the suspension and deactivation of the SIM card numbers. This measure will only affect a small percentage of users, and AIS will be notifying customers to verify their identities.
