Groundbreaking Achievement: Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield Awarded Nobel Prize in Physics for Pioneering Work in Machine Learning by 2024

Renowned scientists Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield have been honored with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking research in machine learning. Hopfield, currently 91 years old, obtained his doctoral degree in Physics from Cornell University and is credited with pioneering research in neural networks, notably the Hopfield network, a single-layer neural network where each neuron is connected to all other neurons.

Meanwhile, at 76 years of age, Hinton is widely recognized as the Godfather of AI, particularly in the realm of deep learning. Aside from his academic achievements, he collaborated with Google from 2013 to 2023 before stepping down in 2023 to focus on the potential dangers of AI. Noteworthy disciples of Hinton include Yann LeCun of Meta/Facebook and Ilya Sutskever of OpenAI/Safe Superintelligence.

TLDR: Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield, recipients of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, are pioneers in machine learning and artificial neural networks.
