Unity Technologies has officially released Unity 6 Engine as promised, reverting back to the old mindset of eliminating Runtime Fee. Along with this announcement, they have introduced a new way of releasing Unity sub-versions.
Moving forward, Unity Engine updates will be categorized into 3 levels:
– Major = Major version updates, such as the recent Unity 6 release
– Patch = Bug-fixing patches without adding new features
– Updates = Feature additions that are optional and compatible with the main Engine version. These updates will be labeled as 6.x as new additions to the system.
The first update from Unity 6 will be Unity 6.1 in April 2025. Unity has also pledged to improve communication with the user community (after facing backlash over the changes in monetization strategy). They will deploy engineering teams to respond to questions on forums and Discord more frequently, increase data collection on bugs and issues, and provide advanced notice of patch content updates to inform users of potential impacts.
TLDR: Unity Technologies released Unity 6 Engine without Runtime Fee, introducing a new version release strategy and committing to better user communication and bug tracking.
