Hong Kong Greenlights Baidu’s Driverless Car Testing Permit

Baidu has been granted a license to test autonomous vehicles in Hong Kong through its driverless taxi service, Apollo Go. This marks the first time that Baidu has tested self-driving cars outside of mainland China.

The license issued to Baidu Apollo allows the company to test 10 autonomous vehicles in the North Lantau area for a period of 5 years. The initial testing must be done on specified roads and there must be staff present in the vehicles to control them if necessary.

Currently, Apollo Go operates in several cities in China, with over 400 cars in service in the city of Wuhan. There have been reports that Baidu is also considering applying for additional testing licenses in Singapore and countries in the ASEAN region.
