Hospital data system in Romania falls victim to ransomware attack, forcing 100 hospitals to shut down

The infamous malware, Backmydata, has struck the Hipocrate Information System (HIS) of hospitals in Romania, causing a major disruption in their operations. As a result, numerous hospitals have been forced to shut down their systems, leading to a significant impact on patient care.

The perpetrators have successfully encrypted the data of 25 hospitals, leaving their administrators with no choice but to close their systems. A proactive measure has been taken to shut down an additional 75 hospitals in order to safeguard them from a similar attack. In total, a staggering number of 100 hospitals are currently operating without any form of IT support.

Among the hospitals that have fallen victim to this cyberattack, most of them possess relatively new backup data, not exceeding three days. However, there is one hospital that has suffered a setback with their backup system, stretching back 12 days.

The aftermath of this attack has resulted in the shutdown of 400 servers and computers. Presently, the medical staff in all hospitals are compelled to provide services using traditional pen and paper methods. Unfortunately, it remains uncertain whether the culprits have successfully exfiltrated the downloaded data or not.
