The Hipocrate Information System (HIS), a hospital data system in Romania, has fallen victim to the Backmydata ransomware attack. As a result, numerous hospitals have been forced to shut down their systems, greatly impacting their ability to provide services.
The perpetrators have successfully encrypted the data of 25 hospitals, leading system administrators to preemptively close the systems of an additional 75 hospitals to prevent further breaches. In total, there are now hundreds of hospitals operating without any IT infrastructure.
Most of the affected hospitals have relatively recent backup data, not exceeding three days. However, there is one hospital that has backup data going back as far as 12 days.
A total of 400 servers and computers have been shut down as a precautionary measure. Currently, all hospital staff are providing services using traditional paper-based methods. At this time, it is yet to be confirmed whether the attackers have exfiltrated any data.
