After three delays, The Day Before was finally released in Early Access on Steam on December 7, 2023. However, the game has received a disappointing response due to numerous bugs and missing features that were showcased in the demo.
Just four days after its release on Steam, Fntastic Studio, the developer of the game, announced that The Day Before has failed to generate enough revenue and the team is now facing a lack of funds to continue the development. This means that there will be no future patches or updates to reveal the game’s full potential.
Fntastic also revealed that all the revenue generated from the game will be used to pay off the debts owed to their business partners, with no plans for crowdfunding or pre-orders during the game’s development. Additionally, Fntastic is working with Valve to provide refunds to gamers who purchased the game through Steam, without the usual requirement of playing for less than two hours as stated by Valve’s policy.
In a short period of time, Fntastic officially shut down the game’s official Discord server, removing most of the text and voice channels, except for the general chat. The server’s news channel, which was used to provide updates on the game’s progress, was filtered and all content on Fntastic’s YouTube channel was deleted as well.
According to Simon Carless, a social media user, citing VK as the source, Fntastic’s CEO, Eduard Gotovtsev, stated that 46% of gamers who purchased the game on Steam have already received a refund. It was also mentioned that the game had a total of 109,382 global sales after deducting the refunded copies.
Mytona, the distributor and investor of this game, also issued an apology to gamers for the game not meeting their expectations. Mytona is currently in talks with Steam to enable players to request refunds and is also in contact with Fntastic to discuss the future of the game.
TLDR: The Day Before’s release on Steam’s Early Access was met with disappointment due to bugs and missing features. Fntastic Studio announced a lack of funds to continue development, resulting in no future updates. They are working with Valve to offer refunds to purchasers and have shut down their Discord server. Mytona, the distributor, is also discussing refunds and the game’s future.
