Impact of Direct Web Developer App Installation Testing on iOS 17.5 Beta 2 in Europe by Apple

Apple has commenced testing a new system for directly installing apps via a web interface for users in the EU region, bypassing the need to go through the App Store. This initiative was announced by Apple about a month ago and has been incorporated into the recent iOS 17.5 beta 2 update for developers.

This system, dubbed Web Distribution by Apple, requires developers to register and verify their domain with App Store Connect in order to install apps through the web. Developers must also connect to Apple’s API to ensure smooth functionality throughout the process, including support for app backups and restores for users.

During the initial app installation process through the developer’s website, users will see a message explaining that they can install the app on their devices. Additionally, there will be identity verification steps such as password entry or Face ID.

Developers who choose to install apps through their own websites will need to pay a Core Technology Fee, set by Apple at 0.5 euros per download exceeding 1 million downloads initially.
