Meta has announced the addition of AI-powered chatbot service, Meta AI, for users in the European Union as of today. This impacts all apps including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, making it slower than elsewhere in the world, and it has been a year since its launch.
The reason the EU just started using Meta is due to regulatory investigations by Ireland’s watchdog agency concerning user data handling practices and privacy concerns. This led Meta to delay the service rollout since mid-last year.
While Meta AI is now available in Europe, its capabilities are limited to text conversations only, not supporting other input types or responses in image form. Moreover, Meta mentions that the models used are not trained on European data, as the company works to address legal issues to provide Meta AI services at a similar level as in other regions worldwide.

TLDR: Meta introduces AI chatbot service in the EU, facing delays due to privacy concerns and regulatory issues, with limited capabilities and ongoing efforts to align with global standards.
