Inauguration Ceremony: TSMC Unveils First Chip Factory in Japan – Japanese Government Prepares Funding for Second Factory Expansion

TSMC, the leading chip manufacturer from Taiwan, held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first factory in Japan yesterday (February 24th). The facility is located in Kumamoto prefecture under the name JASM (Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing), a joint venture between TSMC, Sony Semiconductor, and Denso.

This factory, announced in 2021 and construction starting in 2022, received additional funding from the Japanese government. It will support chip production using cutting-edge 12/16/22/28 nanometer technology, making it the most advanced chip manufacturing plant in Japan. It is expected to create 1,700 jobs once full production begins by the end of this year.

Earlier last month, TSMC announced plans for a second factory in Kumamoto, where Toyota will also be a shareholder in JASM. The second factory is expected to be operational by the end of 2027, with the Japanese government committing up to 730 billion yen to support chip production for various industries in the country.
