Linux Foundation has welcomed the Open Model Initiative (OMI) group of artificial intelligence model developers into its program, aiming to address the issue of creating new image and video models with increasingly restrictive licenses.
OMI was founded by three small entities, namely Invoke, a platform company creating AI-generated images for professional production, ComfyOrg, a team developing ComfyUI GUI system for Stable Diffusion models, and Civitai, a platform for exchanging AI images among creators.
According to SiliconAngle, the OMI group stemmed from Stability AI company’s adjustment of the usage terms for the Stable Diffusion 3.0 model, transitioning it from a free model to a revenue-generating one with more limitations.
The goals set forth by the OMI group are broad, including establishing policies, frameworks, and standards for collaborative models. In the long term, they aim to create highly capable models that are open source and free from issues of unauthorized artist references.
