Increase in Domain-Level DDoS Attacks Up to 80% Reported by Cloudflare Q1/2024

Cloudflare has released a report on DDoS attacks in the first quarter of 2024. Cloudflare’s system can automatically mitigate DDoS attacks 4.5 million times, a 50% increase year-over-year. The largest attack in the quarter reached 2Tbps, utilizing a modified Mirai botnet to target hosts in the Asian region. However, DDoS attacks at the 1Tbps level occur every week.

Another notable finding is that domain-level DDoS attacks have increased by up to 80% compared to the previous year. Nonetheless, attacks at the 3/4 layer have also increased. Lastly, Cloudflare observed a 466% increase in DDoS attacks targeting Sweden since its NATO membership announcement in March. This escalated pattern of attacks previously occurred when Finland joined NATO last year.

According to Cloudflare, Thailand is the top target for 3/4 layer DDoS attacks, ranking 4th after Hong Kong, China, and Kazakhstan.
