Pralhad Joshi, the head of India’s consumer protection agency, has revealed that the agency has warned the popular ride-hailing companies Uber and Ola to stop implementing dual pricing systems after an investigation uncovered discrepancies.
Local Indian media previously reported that these ride-hailing apps were charging higher rates for iPhone users compared to Android users, even for the same route and time. This prompted the Indian regulatory authority to launch an inquiry and order a similar review of other app-based services such as food delivery and event ticket booking to see if they employ similar pricing tactics.
In response, Uber’s spokesperson clarified that the company does not determine pricing based on the user’s phone operating system and will cooperate with the regulatory authority in further investigations.
