Google has revealed that the company has developed a new processing chip called Axion to support AI work primarily. This particular CPU development plan has been in the works for several years, but it has accelerated significantly since the introduction of ChatGPT at the end of 2022.
It is not surprising that Google is investing in developing chips for its own AI cloud services, as both Amazon and Microsoft have also developed their own AI chips. Google itself has its own processing unit called TPU, which has been in use since 2016. However, Axion operates as a central processing unit or CPU.
Axion is developed on Arm architecture, similar to Amazon and Microsoft, and claims to work 30% faster than current processing chips. It will initially be used within Google’s cloud service data centers before being made available for general customer use later this year. On the other hand, TPU has been in service for a long time.

TLDR: Google introduces the new Axion chip to support AI tasks, working faster than current chips and set to be available for customer use by the end of the year.
