Innovative Waymo Unveils 6th Generation Autonomous Driving System with Reduced Camera-Sensor Count for Enhanced Quality.

Waymo introduces the 6th generation of its autonomous driving system with a reduced number of cameras and sensors, yet resilient to environmental conditions – improving cost efficiency and scalability for future vehicle deployment. The system, named Waymo Driver 6, features 13 cameras, 6 radars, 4 lidars, and external audio receivers, a significant departure from the 29 cameras and 5 lidars in the current 5th-gen version. This reduction in hardware is intended to facilitate rapid expansion of their vehicle fleet.

Maintaining a sensor fusion approach, Waymo still leverages a combination of cameras, radars, and lidars to enable comprehensive situational awareness, with the new version boasting enhanced capabilities, such as a maximum detection range of 500 meters and robustness against challenging environmental conditions like dusty dirt roads and extreme temperatures, derived from real-world testing experiences. Another noteworthy change is the switch from using Jaguar I-PACE SUVs to Geely Zeekr custom models, known for their spacious interiors and ease of entry, making them suitable for driverless taxi services with frequent passenger turnover.

Currently undergoing real-world road testing, the Waymo Driver 6th Gen system continues to have a human driver behind the wheel for oversight at all times.
