CEO of Intel, Lip-Bu Tan, sent an email to all Intel employees, which was also shared with investors. The email discussed the necessary cultural changes that the company must undergo. This began with the reduction of top-level management positions, but there are still many other aspects that need to be changed.
Leading with engineering, streamlining complex innovation processes poses a challenge. The current expenses remain higher than industry average. Downsizing within the organization, Tan revealed that some teams have up to 8 hierarchical levels, causing delays in various processes. He was surprised to find that some teams’ KPI was the team size itself, which he does not believe in. This issue inevitably affects unavoidable workforce reduction.
Simplifying work processes, Tan pointed out that Intel holds excessive meetings, calling for a shift towards real-time data-driven decision-making.
Returning to the office, Intel will implement a 4-day workweek as opposed to the current 3 days, starting from September.
Tan acknowledged that taking on the role of Intel’s CEO is perhaps the most challenging in his career. However, he believes that the industry-leading company can bounce back. This serves as a case study in organizational change and employee collaboration.
