According to a report by The New York Times in 2005, approximately 19 years ago, Paul Otellini, the CEO of Intel at the time, had considered purchasing NVIDIA for a whopping $20 billion. However, this idea was shot down by Intel’s board.
Otellini’s vision back then was to acquire NVIDIA to develop GPUs for data centers, which was still in its infancy at that time. Nevertheless, Intel’s board deemed the $20 billion price tag too steep and believed it was more prudent to develop their own GPUs, leading to the Larrabee project spearheaded by the current Intel CEO, Pat Gelsinger, before his departure from Intel in 2009.
Currently, NVIDIA is valued at around $3.5 trillion, significantly higher than the $20 billion price tag from before. On the other hand, Intel’s current value stands at $9.5 trillion, roughly 30 times less than that of NVIDIA.
