Intel has officially unveiled and launched the Xeon server CPU Xeon 6 series, all bearing the code name Sierra Forest. This new branding of Xeon utilizes straightforward numerical models without the need for the traditional Gen naming convention.
Sierra Forest is the first Xeon to exclusively feature E-core (Efficient-cores), focusing on packing a high number of cores with increased energy efficiency. The initial Xeon 6 lineup includes two sub-series: 6700 (up to 144 cores) and 6900 (up to 288 cores), distinguished by the E designation at the end of their model numbers, indicating they are E-core models. Both series are manufactured using Intel 3 technology and support CXL 2.0 bus for CPU-to-accelerator communications.
Additionally, another variant of Xeon 6 is the P-core variant (traditional Xeon), with the code name Granite Rapids expected to be released in Q3 2024.
TLDR: Intel introduces the Xeon 6 series with Sierra Forest code name, featuring E-core models for high core count and energy efficiency, along with plans for a P-core variant named Granite Rapids in Q3 2024.
