Intel unveils the Xeon 5, a cutting-edge processor powering AI at lightning speed with a remarkable 42% increase, effortlessly handling 20 billion parameters in model runtime.

Intel introduces the 5th generation Xeon server CPU, codenamed Emerald Rapids, as an upgrade from the previous Xeon Scalable 4th generation. This new CPU allows for seamless upgrading in existing machines. The notable changes include an increase in cores from 60 to 64, support for DDR5-5600 memory compared to DDR5-4800, a significant threefold increase in last-level cache, with the highest-end model reaching 320MB, and socket connectivity via UPI 2.0, enabling data transmission at 20 billion times per second.

Overall, the overall performance of the 5th generation Xeon surpasses its predecessor by 21%. In terms of artificial intelligence capabilities, the performance has increased by an impressive 42%. Intel’s benchmark tests with forward-looking IBM on the watsonx.data platform showed significantly improved data querying performance, up to 2.7 times better. Numenta, a developer of AI platforms on CPUs, also stated that running tasks on this new Xeon CPU outperformed using graphics chips by a factor of 6.5, all at a lower price.

A prominent new feature is the Intel Trust Domain Extensions (Intel TDX), an extension that allows virtual machines to run in a separate secure zone, where memory is encrypted and separate from other parts. Previously, this feature was only available for select models in the 4th generation Xeon sold to specific cloud providers. However, the 5th generation Xeon makes this feature accessible to all users. Now, individuals can choose to purchase models that support this feature for their own use.

TLDR: Intel unveils the 5th generation Xeon server CPU, Emerald Rapids, with notable improvements such as increased cores, faster memory support, larger cache, and enhanced data transmission. Overall performance surpasses the previous generation by 21%, with an impressive 42% boost in AI capabilities. Unique features include Intel Trust Domain Extensions, previously limited to specific models, now available for all users.
