Introducing AMD’s Zenith-Class Ryzen 8000G APU: Pioneering Zen 4 Architecture, RDNA 3 Graphics, and Integrated Neural Processing Unit

AMD has introduced the Ryzen G series APU, which combines laptop chips with desktop gaming capabilities. This fulfills the needs of gamers who want an all-in-one solution for their desktops, including a powerful onboard graphics card separate from the CPU. The latest Ryzen G series currently available is the Ryzen 5000G, featuring Zen 3 CPU cores and Vega GPU cores, which was launched in 2021.

This year, AMD has unveiled the Ryzen 8000G series, incorporating the Ryzen 7040 chip from the laptop side (code-named “Phoenix”). However, they have given it the 8000 series designation, aligning it with the Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point,” which is essentially a rebranded 7040.

The specifications of the Ryzen 8000G series consist of Zen 4 CPU cores, RDNA 3 GPU cores (Radeon 700M series), and some sub-models even include an NPU (marking the first time a desktop chip has a Neural Processing Unit). All sub-models have a consistent TDP of 65W.

The Ryzen 7 8700G features an 8-core, 16-thread CPU with a total cache of 24MB. It includes a Radeon 780M GPU with 12 compute units (CUs) and an NPU, priced at $329.

The Ryzen 5 8600G offers a 6-core, 12-thread CPU with a total cache of 22MB. It is equipped with a Radeon 760M GPU featuring 8 CUs and an NPU, priced at $229.

The Ryzen 5 8500G includes a 6-core, 12-thread CPU with a total cache of 22MB. It showcases a Radeon 740M GPU with 4 CUs and does not include an NPU. It is priced at $179, with a slightly lower clock speed compared to the 8600G.

The Ryzen 3 8300G houses a 4-core, 8-thread CPU with a total cache of 12MB. It also has a Radeon 740M GPU with 4 CUs and does not have an NPU. However, it is not available for general retail.

Of particular interest are the two lower-end models, the 8500G and 8300G, which feature Zen 4c CPU cores. These are smaller-sized Zen 4 cores that have the same features but consume less power. The 8500G adopts a combination of Zen 4 x2 and Zen 4c x2 cores, while the 8300G uses a configuration of 1 Zen 4 core with 3 Zen 4c cores.

The Ryzen 8000G series products will be available for purchase starting from January 31, 2024. Furthermore, OEM manufacturers will release PCs utilizing Ryzen 8000G series chips in the second quarter of 2024.
