Microsoft has introduced its own Data Processing Unit (DPU) chip under the name Azure Boost DPU, entering the DPU market where data processing chips are utilized to reduce the workload on CPUs. Other prominent players in this field include NVIDIA BlueField DPU, AMD Pensando, and Intel IPU.
Having acquired the company Fungible in 2023, Microsoft has developed Azure Boost DPU specifically for Azure data centers. While details about Azure Boost DPU are currently limited, it is said to combine Ethernet and PCIe, featuring storage and network processing engines, data processing accelerators, and integrated security features.
According to Microsoft, incorporating a DPU can significantly decrease energy consumption by up to three times and improve efficiency by four times when running storage tasks on the cloud compared to traditional CPU usage.
TLDR: Microsoft unveils Azure Boost DPU, a specialized Data Processing Unit designed for Azure data centers, aiming to enhance processing efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
