Introducing Horizon OS: Meta Quest’s Innovative Software Empowering Manufacturers to Develop Hardware Independently.

Meta has announced the launch of Meta Horizon OS, derived from the software in Meta Quest, but open for use by other manufacturers. Currently, there are 3 hardware developers interested in developing hardware for it: ASUS, Lenovo, and Microsoft.

Within Meta Horizon OS, there is mixed-reality technology readily available, such as Passthrough image system, Scene Understanding, and Spatial Anchors. The front-end app store will be rebranded as Meta Horizon Store.

The manufacturers unveiling their plans in this announcement are:

ASUS ROG is gearing up to develop new hardware specifically for gaming.
Lenovo, the co-designer of Oculus Rift S, is gearing up to create devices for work, education, or entertainment.
Microsoft Xbox is preparing to release a special version of Meta Quest.

Although specific specs are not revealed, it is mentioned that devices from these manufacturers can use the Qualcomm XR2 Gen2 chip used in Meta Quest 3.

For app development, the App Lab section will be made more accessible, with users only needing to meet basic technical conditions. Additionally, there is an invitation for Google to bring Google Play onto Meta Horizon OS.
