Introducing Speedometer 3.0: Browser Developers Unveil Enhanced Benchmarking Tool for Modern Web Era

The consortium of web browser developers, including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, each controlling the main engines Blink/V8, Gecko/SpiderMonkey, and WebKit/JavaScriptCore, have jointly unveiled the new benchmark version Speedometer 3.

Initiated by the WebKit team in 2014, Speedometer saw its first iteration in 2018 and has been steadily used up to 2022. The web browser development group has announced their collaboration on Speedometer 3, which is now available for public use.

Speedometer 3.0 marks a shift in development model towards equal partnership among all four entities. The source code is open to the public on GitHub to encourage contributions from other developers.

The latest in Speedometer 3.0 includes new test suites that better reflect the current web landscape. These include rendering tests for canvas and SVG charts (such as React Stockcharts, Chart.js, Perf Dashboard, Observable Plot), code editing tools (CodeMirror), WYSIWYG editing (TipTap), and web page simulation (Next.js and Nuxt.js).

The TodoMVC test suite has been updated to support the latest versions of popular frameworks (Angular, Backbone, jQuery, Lit, Preact, React, React+Redux, Svelte, Vue). JavaScript testing has been enhanced to cover ES5, ES6, WebComponent specs, and the DOM test suite has been expanded to include more complex CSS rules.

Speedometer 3.0 has also revised the way sync and async performance metrics are measured in alignment with changes in web page rendering engines.

TLDR: A new benchmark version, Speedometer 3, developed collaboratively by major web browser developers, introduces updated test suites and performance metrics aligned with modern web development standards.
