Fedora has officially announced the Fedora Atomic Desktops brand, which is a sub-distribution that uses an immutable package management system called rpm-ostree, which treats all packages in the image as a tree structure.
The Fedora Atomic project started in 2014 (first reported by Blognone in 2016) as an image for cloud usage only (later evolved into Fedora CoreOS) and then expanded into the workstation market with the name Fedora Silverblue.
Fedora Atomic Desktops consists of 4 spins that cater to different desktop environments, namely:
1. Fedora Silverblue (GNOME)
2. Fedora Kinoite (KDE Plasma)
3. Fedora Sway Atomic
4. Fedora Budgie Atomic
In the future, Fedora suggests that we may see spins using other desktop environments added, such as Xfce.
TLDR: Fedora has introduced Fedora Atomic Desktops, a sub-distribution that utilizes an immutable package management system. It includes four spins for different desktop environments and hints at possible future additions.
