Microsoft has introduced a new gaming joystick for the latest Xbox Adaptive Joystick, specially designed for gamers with disabilities. The appearance is reminiscent of VR game controllers, but it is uniquely designed for single-handed control, and is priced more affordably for easier accessibility.
Microsoft has maintained a focus on devices for the disabled community for quite some time now. Starting with the release of the Xbox Adaptive Controller in 2018, additional peripherals were introduced in 2022, and the customizable Proteus Controller followed in 2024.
The newly unveiled Xbox Adaptive Joystick is a wired supplemental joystick that connects to the original Xbox Controller (both standard and Adaptive Controller) to allow players with limited control capabilities to enjoy gaming with friends. Priced at a reduced rate of $29.99, it provides a more accessible option compared to the full-priced $99.99 Adaptive Controller.
The new joystick features fewer buttons than a standard controller (due to its intended single-handed use), including one joystick, standard ABXY buttons, and two back trigger buttons. However, players can remap all the buttons to suit each game’s control system. For those who prefer access to all buttons like a regular controller, it can be connected to the full version Xbox Controller via a cable.
The packaging of the Xbox Adaptive Joystick is designed to be user-friendly for individuals with disabilities (refer to accompanying video), and Microsoft has also updated the packaging for the new Xbox Series X|S console version set to be released later this year.
The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is priced at $29.99 and will be available in early 2025.
TLDR: Microsoft introduces the Xbox Adaptive Joystick for gamers with disabilities, enabling easier accessibility and enhanced gaming experience at an affordable price point.
