Uday Shankar, the Vice President of JioStar, which owns JioHotstar, a major streaming platform in India resulting from the merger between JioCinema, a platform by the giant Reliance group, and Disney+ Hotstar by Disney, has revealed that they now have over 200 million paying subscribers.
This figure holds significant importance as even though JioHotstar targets only the Indian market, it has managed to become the third largest paid video streaming platform in the world, following behind Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, both of which also have a presence in India.
JioHotstar employs a strategy of low subscription fees and their flagship content being the live broadcast of the IPL cricket league, which has rapidly increased their subscriber base. Meanwhile, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video focus on producing more regional language content.
