TIOBE released the popularity rankings of programming languages for July 2024, with C++ reclaiming the second spot from C after being surpassed for the first time last month. The top 3 spots remain occupied by Python, C++, and C as they have been for several months.
This month’s highlight according to TIOBE is the rise of Rust from 17th place in the same period last year to 13th place, marking Rust’s highest ranking achievement. One reason could be attributed to the United States government’s recommendation to transition from C and C++ to Rust due to security reasons.
Paul Jansen, CEO of TIOBE, expressed his opinion that Rust is poised to break into the top 10 most popular languages, a feat that should not be too difficult to achieve.

TLDR: C++ overtakes C in TIOBE’s July 2024 programming language popularity rankings. Rust climbs from 17th to 13th place, potentially due to US government urging transition for security reasons. CEO predicts Rust entering top 10 is achievable.
