Readers of Blognone may recall that two years ago, Kirin, the Japanese beverage manufacturer, teamed up with Meiji University to develop a spoon and bowl that introduce a gentle electric current into food to break down into ions, enhancing the salty taste. This innovation benefits those looking to reduce sodium consumption while still enjoying salty flavors. Recently, Kirin has launched this product to the general public.
Kirin will begin selling the Electric Salt Spoon (エレキソルト スプーン) in the first batch online at a price of 19,800 yen (approximately 4,600 baht) for 200 sets, using a lottery system. The products will start shipping in June and will be available in retail stores afterward. International sales will commence next year, with a target of selling one million sets of the Electric Salt Spoon within the next five years.
The spoon weighs 60 grams, excluding the CR2 3V battery, and allows for adjusting the saltiness level in four levels. It can be used with foods like soup, curry, fried rice, ramen, and more.
The research on introducing an electric current into food to enhance the salty taste, starting from a cucumber to this spoon, has also received an Ig Nobel prize in 2023, recognizing groundbreaking yet humorous research efforts.
