By the end of 2024, attorney Steven Schwartz filed a lawsuit against an airline after his client was injured by a falling tray table in 2019. The complaints Schwartz wrote referenced numerous cases, but opposing attorneys and judges could not find evidence of these cases. Schwartz later admitted to using ChatGPT and mistakenly believed it to be like a regular search engine.
The cases where attorneys used ChatGPT to help write complaints and fabricated cases have resulted in many fines being imposed by courts in the United States.
