Waymo, an autonomous vehicle company under Alphabet, has been granted permission to bring self-driving cars into the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) area. Currently, the cars are only conducting test drives on airport grounds to gather route data and are not yet providing services to the general public.
The agreement allowing autonomous vehicles into SFO is set for a 30-day period, with Waymo’s cars permitted to enter to collect accessible route data with a maximum of two vehicles at a time. A designated staff member must supervise the vehicles at all times.
Nicole Gavel, Waymo’s Head of Business Development, stated that SFO is a location where Waymo customers in San Francisco demand the most coverage. If commercial services were to begin, it would significantly boost the city’s travel and tourism industry.
In addition to SFO, Waymo has also disclosed receiving a license to test services in the South Bay area of California, including nearly all of San Jose.
TLDR: Waymo is testing self-driving cars at SFO for data collection, with plans to expand services in San Francisco and the South Bay area of California.
