Limiting Access: Facebook’s Closure of Groups API Prevents Social Tool Utilization

Facebook’s recent release of Graph API v19.0 has brought about some significant changes, particularly regarding the Facebook Groups API. This API, which was previously used to access content within Facebook Groups, has now been labeled as “deprecated” and will be completely discontinued in the next 90 days.

According to Meta, several external social tools have been making use of the Groups API to allow pages to send private replies directly to individuals who have posted within the groups. However, Meta has assured developers of these social apps that they will be provided with alternative channels to continue using without relying on the Groups API.

Unfortunately, TechCrunch has reported that many social management tools still rely on the Groups API for scheduling automated text posts in groups. With the impending closure of this API, these tools will no longer be able to offer this functionality, resulting in significant impact on a large number of users.

TLDR: Facebook’s Graph API v19.0 has deprecated the Facebook Groups API, which used to grant access to content within groups. Meta promises to provide alternative channels for developers to continue using, but many social management tools will be affected as they rely on the soon-to-be-unavailable Groups API for scheduling automated text posts in groups.
