IDC, a market research company, has released a report predicting that the number of smartphone deliveries in 2024 will grow by 6.2% from the previous year to 1.24 billion units. This resurgence in the market follows two consecutive years of declining deliveries. However, IDC estimates that from 2025 onwards until 2028, the overall market growth will slow to an average of 2.6% due to various factors such as longer device lifecycles, delayed upgrades, and the thriving second-hand market.
Nabila Popal, IDC’s research director, mentioned that while smartphone manufacturers are using Generative AI as a selling point to encourage customers to upgrade, there is currently no clear indication that this significantly influences “must-have” decision-making.
IDC also highlighted that while the smartphone market is expected to grow, the growth is predominantly on the Android side with a 7.6% increase. In contrast, Apple saw a modest growth of only 0.4% in the past year. A key factor was the decline in Apple sales in China due to strong competition from Chinese smartphone brands like Huawei and Xiaomi.
IDC forecasts a growth of 3.1% for iOS smartphones by Apple in 2025, while Android overall growth is projected at 1.7%.
TLDR: IDC predicts a surge in smartphone deliveries for 2024 but anticipates a slower market growth from 2025 to 2028 due to various market factors and competition in the industry.
