Meta Launches Enrollment for United States Users to Apply for Community Notes Writing Privileges

Meta has officially launched the Community Notes project as announced in January 2025, aiming to replace the traditional fact-checking system. Community Notes is an initiative open to volunteers who can assist in fact-checking the accuracy of various posts, similar to what Twitter/X has been doing for a while now. Meta’s recent direction is clear in moving away from outsourcing data verification, as they have indicated no intention of hiring external personnel for this task moving forward. While Community Notes is currently only operational in the United States, it is expected to expand internationally in the near future.

The Community Notes system will be applied across all three social media platforms under the Meta umbrella, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Each note must be kept concise within 500 characters and include a link to external sources for reference. Volunteers in the United States can now register for Community Notes, provided they are over 18 years old, have had a Meta social media account for at least 6 months, and have confirmed their phone number for two-factor authentication.

TLDR: Meta introduces Community Notes for volunteer-based fact-checking to replace biased fact-checking systems, starting in the United States and expanding globally soon.
