The state of Michigan is currently in the process of constructing the Interstate 94 Smart Highway, a 40-mile stretch between Ann Arbor and Detroit, to be the first ‘Smart Expressway’ in the United States. The testing phase has been successfully completed.
Cavnue, the company overseeing construction, has stated that with AI technology cameras and sensors every 200 meters, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be able to detect accidents, potholes, or traffic congestion before sending real-time alerts to highway users with connected and navigated features to reduce accidents and traffic congestion.
Additionally, alerts will be sent to MDOT to allow the department to be aware of current conditions on the expressway and respond to accidents more quickly, resulting in improved traffic flow.
Cavnue also mentioned the possibility of switching AI technology cameras to radar for image capture, as well as creating special lanes for autonomous vehicles in the future before starting similar projects in Texas and another in Southeast Asia.
