Microsoft Announces Expiry of Office 2016 and 2019 by October 2025

Microsoft has issued a warning that Office 2016 and Office 2019 perpetual versions will no longer receive support after October 14, 2025, the same date as Windows 10. This gives users approximately 1 and a half years to make the transition.

The recommendation from Microsoft is to switch to Microsoft 365, which offers the full suite of Office apps and server services like SharePoint and Exchange via the cloud. Alternatively, for those who prefer not to pay for a subscription, there is the option of Office 2021, although it will also expire after just 1 year on October 13, 2026.

Organizations using on-premise Exchange email systems will also face issues, as Exchange Server will reach end of support simultaneously. Microsoft plans to release a new version of Exchange Server in the second half of 2025, giving users only a few months to upgrade. Customers are advised to upgrade to Exchange Server 2019 to ensure a smooth transition.

TLDR: Microsoft warns that support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 perpetual versions will end on October 14, 2025, urging users to move to Microsoft 365 or Office 2021. Exchange Server users must also prepare for the end of support and upgrade to Exchange Server 2019.
