Microsoft Announces the End of Visual Studio for Mac, Recommends VS Code as the Alternative

Microsoft has made a big announcement for .NET developers using Mac that they will no longer develop Visual Studio for Mac. The last version, 17.6, was released in June and will receive patches for another 12 months, until August 31, 2024. Microsoft recommends that developers switch to using the C# Dev Kit extension on VS Code instead. Additionally, developers of .NET MAUI and Unity also have extensions on VS Code available for their use.

For Mac users who still want to use Visual Studio, they can run a Windows VM on their own machine to use Visual Studio. Alternatively, they can opt to use the Microsoft Dev Box, which is a VM on the cloud specifically for software development.

Microsoft states that they want to focus more on Visual Studio for Windows and increase their emphasis on VS Code.
