Microsoft Ceases Development of Server Update Service Client Management in Windows Server 2025

Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the server that manages client updates for Windows Server. This change will come into effect in Windows Server 2025, set to be released later this year.

WSUS is a tool that allows administrators to choose which Windows updates to release to machines within the organization and when to release them. It was developed to replace the Software Update Services (SUS) from the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 era and has been in use ever since. Its functions overlap with those of modern device management systems to a considerable extent.

Microsoft’s announcement labels WSUS as “deprecated,” meaning it will no longer be actively developed but will still be available for use in Windows Server 2025. For long-term future use, Microsoft recommends utilizing other client update management tools such as Windows Autopatch and Microsoft Intune for clients, and Azure Update Manager for server updates.

TLDR: Microsoft is discontinuing development of WSUS for client updates in Windows Server, recommending the use of alternative tools like Windows Autopatch and Microsoft Intune.
