Just after completing his first week as the President of the United States, Donald Trump wasted no time in issuing a directive to lift the ban on TikTok, extending it for another 75 days with the stipulation that the company must sell its operations in the US. This move has sparked speculation and interest from various parties such as Oracle, Perplexity AI, and even Elon Musk.
Recently, Trump revealed that Microsoft is also in negotiations regarding this matter. Many may not be aware that this is actually the second time Microsoft has engaged in talks to acquire TikTok. Back in 2020, negotiations fell through quickly after Trump (during his first term) ordered TikTok to separate from ByteDance. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, remarked at that time, “This is the strangest deal I’ve ever seen.”
