Microsoft has announced a plan to push for the adoption of Passkey, a passwordless identity verification method that is more secure than traditional password-based authentication. Several changes have been made to Microsoft’s account login system, starting with the adjustment of the login screen to make logging in with Passkey easier. These changes have been in effect since March. New Microsoft account users will have the option to use Passkey as the default method of authentication during registration, although other methods are still available for selection.
Furthermore, Microsoft will begin supporting existing users to transition to using Passkey or passwordless authentication more frequently. For example, if the login settings are configured to use a password+OTP, when logging in, the OTP page will be displayed first and users will be encouraged to start using Passkey instead.
Microsoft states that the Passkey authentication method is more convenient and secure than traditional password-based authentication methods.
TLDR: Microsoft is promoting the use of Passkey, a more secure and convenient passwordless authentication method, in its account login system.
