Microsoft introduces Copilot+ PC, advocating the necessity of PCs equipped with NPU chips to accelerate AI processing speed, enabling some features to run directly on the device. The showcased device at this event utilizes the Snapdragon X Elite chip, emphasizing AI processing power exceeding 40 TOPS (trillions of instructions per second), with the embedded NPU serving as the foundation for running specific small-scale language models directly on the machine. This new PC group will feature crucial components such as:
Recall – search everything we have ever seen on our screen with semantic index understanding, storing images of our screen every few seconds to comprehend what files we are looking at or which websites are open. All data is stored locally on our machine; this system requires a minimum of 256GB storage space, with Recall itself consuming 25GB to store screen data for about 3 months.
Live Caption – similar to Android’s, supports translating audio in videos and converting it into English subtitles, accommodating up to 44 languages (Microsoft’s website does not specify if it can provide subtitles in the original language); it supports all 44 languages, including Thai.
Super Resolution – enhances image details in games, limited to specific games that support it initially.
Windows Studio Effects – AI feature set for image and sound transformation for online meetings, such as background blur and improving audio clarity.
For the Copilot app, Microsoft announced an upgrade to GPT-4o in the coming weeks to enable direct voice communication with Copilot.
Computers eligible for Copilot+ PC include those from Microsoft’s own Surface lineup and machines from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. The new Surface models will be available starting June 18th.
