Following Microsoft’s announcement to bring 4 games to rival consoles PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, some of these games have now made their way onto the stores of both PlayStation and Switch. What’s intriguing is the absence of the word “Xbox” in any case, with the developers using the term Microsoft Corporation or Microsoft Studios instead.
In the case of Nintendo Switch, this isn’t the first time Microsoft has brought games to sell, as they previously distributed Ori and the Blind Forest.
As for the PlayStation Store, it marks the first time Microsoft’s name has appeared on the store, but only with a selection of 3 games. Interestingly, the game Hi-Fi Rush opted to use the name Bethesda Softworks as the distributor instead, reflecting the internal management of Xbox Game Studios still segregating Bethesda and Activision Blizzard from other studios within the ecosystem.
This kind of cross-platform game sales has occurred before, notably with the baseball game MLB The Show from Sony starting to sell on Xbox Store in 2021 and Nintendo Switch in 2022.
TLDR: Microsoft brings some games to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch stores without mentioning Xbox, highlighting a shift in cross-platform game distribution.
