The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the safety of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system after four accidents, one of which resulted in a pedestrian fatality.
This investigation aims to assess the effectiveness of FSD in scenarios with poor visibility such as fog, glare, or dust. How well does the FSD system perform in these conditions, and can the vehicle safely navigate them? Following the investigation, NHTSA will determine the frequency of accidents in such circumstances. Another aspect under scrutiny is whether Tesla’s patch release process impacts the safety of FSD.
The investigation covers all vehicles equipped with FSD from 2016 onwards, including the Cybertruck, totaling approximately 2.4 million vehicles.
TLDR: NHTSA is probing the safety of Tesla’s FSD system following multiple accidents to determine its performance in adverse conditions and the impact of patch releases on safety.
