Several retail establishments in the United Kingdom have recently reported being targeted by cyber attacks. Most recently, the iconic department store Harrods confirmed that they were attacked in order to gain unauthorized access to their systems. However, they were able to maintain security and had to limit internet connections as a precautionary measure. Nevertheless, the store continues to provide services, including their online platform harrods.com.
Cybersecurity expert Will Thomas previously identified a malware group known as SCATTERED SPIDER that is currently targeting retail groups in the UK. This group has previously hacked into large companies such as Twilio, Cloudflare, RiotGames, and Coinbase, often starting with attacks like SIM swaps or sending phishing links.
Another store that fell victim to these attacks is M&S, which has been under attack since last week. This led to disruptions such as the suspension of credit card payments and online services like click & collect. Meanwhile, Co-op has restricted external system access and even shut down VPN services as a precaution, requiring employees to work in-store.
