Music Camp United States Alleges AI Company Created Songs Suno and Udio.

A group of music labels in the United States, led by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), filed a lawsuit against the AI music generation companies Suno and Udio for providing services to create songs based on the input provided by users.

Although the cases are similar, each music label filed a separate lawsuit, with Suno being sued in the Southern District of California while Udio was sued in the Southern District of New York.

The lawsuits filed by the music labels against Suno and Udio do not explicitly specify direct evidence of using any particular songs for training, unlike the lawsuit filed by the New York Times against OpenAI, which presented clear evidence that ChatGPT was able to generate entire articles. The allegations in question point to the similarities in the songs created by Suno and Udio, evading the companies’ inquiries regarding what data was used for training. Additionally, Antonio Rodriguez, a representative from Matrix Partners who invested in Suno, is aware that Suno may face legal action from music labels in the future.

The lawsuit demands that both companies cease using music with copyright from all the music labels filing the lawsuit, pay damages of $150,000 per work used, as well as interest and other legal expenses.

Legal issues could be one reason why Google continues to avoid developing AI that generates music for wide use, focusing instead on collaborating with musicians in the industry.
