Negotiation: Apple Collaborates with Baidu to Integrate AI into iPhone Versions for Chinese Market.

The Wall Street Journal reports, citing related sources, that Apple has begun negotiations with Baidu to incorporate Generative AI into iPhones and other devices for versions sold in China, in order to comply with regulations that require AI models to be certified by Chinese agencies before use.

Currently, there are over 40 AI models approved by Chinese authorities, including Baidu’s chatbot Ernie, with no models developed by non-Chinese companies receiving approval.

Apple’s approach will be similar to Samsung, with the Galaxy S24 using Ernie instead of Google’s Gemini Pro.

Earlier reports indicated that Apple had talks with several AI companies to use Generative AI on iPhones, including Google and OpenAI. In the case of China, Apple is currently in talks with Baidu, which may change to other AI companies in China. However, this news confirms once again that Apple is truly following in the footsteps of other AI companies.
