Netflix Acquires Disney’s Vast Compilation: A Formidable Alliance Without Perpetual Rivals, Featuring the Esteemed Grey’s Anatomy

Even though they are direct competitors in the streaming industry, when their schedules don’t overlap, business deals can still happen. Most recently, Netflix signed a deal with Disney to acquire the streaming rights for 14 shows within the Disney network, to be released on Netflix over the next 18 months.

One of the key shows in this deal is the popular series Grey’s Anatomy, produced by ABC, a subsidiary of Disney. The series is currently approaching its 20th season (Netflix has already streamed 19 seasons). Additionally, other popular shows like Lost, This Is Us, Prison Break, Archer, How I Met Your Mother, White Collar, Home Improvement, The Resident, ESPN 30 for 30, My Wife and Kids, Reba, The Bernie Mac Show, Wonder Years, and the upcoming series The Hughleys will also be part of this deal, set to be released in the upcoming year.

In the past, the streaming industry was fiercely competitive, with each platform vying for exclusive content. However, as the competition has cooled off in recent years (due to injuries suffered on both sides), streaming companies have turned to licensing shows to their competitors, seeking additional revenue streams. This is reminiscent of the early days of streaming, where such exchanges were more common.

TLDR: Netflix and Disney have made a deal to have 14 Disney shows, including Grey’s Anatomy and This Is Us, stream on Netflix over the next year and a half. This move signifies a shift in the competitive streaming industry, as companies are now licensing content to their competitors for additional revenue.
