Nightdive Studios, renowned for their expertise in porting and remastering classic games, announced the release date of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Edition on June 26, 2025, for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
System Shock 2, a sci-fi first-person shooter game released in 1999, was developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios as a sequel to the original System Shock released in 1994. The game’s designer, Ken Levine, later gained recognition for creating BioShock in 2007.
The origins of Nightdive Studios can be traced back to the founder, Stephen Kick, who in 2012 had a desire to play classic old-school games and discovered that the copy of System Shock 2 he purchased no longer functioned on his PC. This led him on a quest to acquire the rights to the game (as Looking Glass Studios had already closed down), ultimately succeeding and bringing the game to GOG in 2013 without a remaster.
Nightdive Studios took it a step further by remaking System Shock 1 with the original team (released in 2023), and now they are announcing the remaster of System Shock 2 as System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Edition. Kick mentioned in an interview that the game is in a playable state and does not require a full remake.
