NVIDIA Unveils Annual Iterations of Cutting-Edge GPUs, Blackwell Ultra Leading the Charge, Followed by Rubin

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, announced at Computex in Taiwan that NVIDIA will now release a new GPU every year, replacing the previous trend of every 2 years.

The GPU for 2024 will be named Blackwell, as already revealed at the beginning of the year. Following this, in 2025, there will be an upgraded version called Blackwell Ultra (reminiscent of Tick-Tock strategy?), and in 2026, a brand new GPU with the code name Rubin. Finally, in 2027, there will be Rubin Ultra.

On the CPU side, the next CPU after Grace is Vera, set to be released in 2026 along with Rubin (derived from Vera Rubin, an American astronomer who revolutionized the concept of galaxy rotation, using a naming convention similar to Grace Hopper).

Additionally, during the major upgrade years, NVIDIA will also upgrade other components of their data center architecture, including high-speed interconnects for GPUs NVLink, network chip SuperNIC, and InfiniBand/Ethernet switches.

Huang referred to this as the “one-year rhythm”, focusing on pushing technology to its limits and then offering products based on consumer demand.

TLDR: NVIDIA announces new GPU released annually, with upcoming models named Blackwell, Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra. Vera CPU and upgrades to data center architecture also planned. Huang emphasizes a focus on pushing technology limits and meeting consumer needs promptly.
