OneWeb’s Satellite Integration Empowers AusMobile’s Remote Base Station Connectivity in Remote Regions

Telstra, the leading mobile phone service provider in Australia, is now connecting remote base stations using OneWeb’s low-earth orbit satellites. Iskra Nikolova, Telstra’s Network Infrastructure Manager, explains that these remote base stations often face natural disasters, leaving communities in these areas without communication. Telstra currently provides mobile phone network coverage to remote areas using over 300 satellite towers that rely on geostationary satellites. However, within the next 18 months, Telstra will transition to using OneWeb, with a bandwidth of 25Gbps purchased from the company. This transition will significantly reduce the latency of these satellite towers, decreasing it from 250ms to just 50-70ms.

As Australia is a vast country with remote regions and a dense population that makes it challenging to lay fiber networks, Telstra, as a company, offers various satellite services. This includes providing in-home internet connectivity through Starlink and direct mobile phone services via Starlink.

TLDR: Telstra, the leading mobile phone service provider in Australia, is replacing their geostationary satellites with OneWeb’s low-earth orbit satellites to connect remote base stations. This transition will improve communication in remote areas and reduce latency from 250ms to 50-70ms. Telstra also offers Starlink services for in-home internet connectivity and direct mobile phone services.
